The
Global Eco Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference
is a green event and the Global Eco Secretariat
is committed to running an environmentally
sustainable event. In staging the conference,
products and services that have less of
an impact on the environment are choosen.
By
'Going Green' our ultimate aim is to make
our actions sustainable. This applies to
all facets of the conference however in
particular to the areas of:
Water
Energy
Air
Waste
Transport
Many
of these areas are interlinked and provide
opportunities to make environmental savings.
Offset
Your Emmissions
At the conclusion of the Global Eco
Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference, the
conference gas emissions footprint will
be offset.
You
are encouraged to offset your carbon emissions
for the entire conference, however part
thereof is a great start too. There are
many organisations in Australia where
you can offset your emissions, a useful
tool is the online
carbon calulator developed
by the Sustainable Tourism Cooperative
Research Centre.
Besides
calculating your carbon emissions for
the conference the tool provides a number
of tips on how to further reduce your
impact and provides links to a list
of carbon offset providers.
You
are able to offset your travel carbon
footprint too, some options are:
Flights
Most airlines now offer an option to
offset your flight upon making an online
booking or if you book your flight through
Flight Centre, ask one of their staff
to assist you. Alternatively you are
able to calculate your own offset through
the AGO accredited organisation Auscarbon
International.
Car
Travel
AGO accredited offset providers that
calculate and offset car travel include
Greenfleet.
Conference
Products
Please do not throw your lanyards, name
sleeves or delegate bags away. If you
won't use these items again you are
most welcome to return them to the conference
organisers and we will use these for
future conferences.
The
Secretariat's Sustainable Actions
Management Solutions (QLD) (the conference
organisers) is certified under Ecotourism
Australia's Climate Action Certification
Program as a Climate Action Leader. The
Secretariat has incorporated strategic climate
change responses across all relevant levels
of planning and operations and is measuring
and auditing the carbon footprint via a
credible system. The Secretariat has undertaken
an advanced level of adaptation, emissions
reduction and offsetting and is working
towards becoming Carbon Neutral.
Some
of the actions the Secretariat undertakes:
purchasing from local suppliers is
encouraged to reduce transport
phone and video conferencing is utilised
where possible
electronic filing management systems are
implemented and printing is discouraged
supplies are bought in bulk, recycled and
individual wrapping avoided where possible
staff awareness campaigns highlight the
organisational commitment to emission reductions
marketing mediums highlight the importance
of climate change awareness and actions
to reduce emissions
